about

MalLabel’s latest release comes from Chris Cohan, aka Poppa Doses, host of Dubstep.fm’s weekly radio show Sucka Free Showcase. Poppa Doses first emerged onto the bay area’s bass scene in 2011 with a dubstep remix of Jaswho? and Hillary Ellis’ house tune, ‘Alive.’ The remix, plus his frequent bookings, encouraged him to hone his production skills and develop a sound all his own. He’s rapidly gained popularity because of his insane technical abilities, and his tracks feature a high level of sophistication and intricacy.

“More Muzik Less Talk” begins with the title track. Straying from the usual 140bpm dubstep tempo, but maintaining the traditional use of heavy, syncopated bass and chopped up dub/reggae samples. The title track sets the mood for the album, it encourages the dance floor to envelope themselves in the undulating sub bass and stop all useless chatter. Two remixes of ‘Echo Boo’ appear on the album, both of them varying 140 styles. DJG strips the tune from it’s original aggressive sound and creates a funky, sublo version, (sure to be a favorite of the ladies) while The Widdler stays true to his brand of deep dubstep, constructing eerie soundscapes and a second drop that is sure to get pulled back. ‘DosiDose’ is another example of Poppa Doses diverse sound this time working with songstress Hillary Ellis whose haunting and beautiful vocals ease into a bellicose bass-line that screams at the decaying, drug-infested underground dance scene.

Poppa Doses’ carefully crafted and well-constructed tunes make this sophomore release a heavy hitter. His eclectic style found on ‘More Muzik Less Talk’ showcases a true talent emerging from the Bay Area scene of whom bass music fans are sure to follow.
