about

Right now it is business as usual in the Bay Area, trains are gliding over elevated platforms, people are rushing around trying to traverse the busy landscape, and the waters and waves of the Pacific wait patiently to pass through the Golden Gate so that they may eventually have the honor to find themselves buttressed firmly against the glory that is the City of Dallas. Also, right now in Dallas, a young beat creator is hard at work, sequestering himself to his lab and conjuring opuses through his own variety of temperamental and nervy musical alchemy. This young sequence layer goes by the name of Ahab, and his forthcoming EP “Asnosmia” is a more than opportune way to get a taste a selection of his skills.

From the opening pads to the last second of the anthemic, ass-swinging party jam remix of the title track by Knight Riderz, “Asnosmia” comprises 100% of your daily dose of psychedelic, crunky, glitch hop goodness. The title track kicks off the playlist at an easy, somber lilt, stuffed full of dark and ghostly gangster synth riffs. ‘Protons’ bustles with a laid back swagger on a bed of gruff and grumbling synth rolls, while the upbeat ‘Azure’ is a strutting, dreamy piece that shimmers with Konami-esque arpeggio flares. Next up, ‘Yeah, Right,’ takes a dramatic edge, glitching between effortless low key breaks to razor sharp amen turnarounds, and the EP closes with a ditty that could easily be the sound bed to a daydream, the gorgeous ‘Exhale.’ Last but not least, the radical beat forging duo Free Crush knock out an experimental and high tech, moomba-esque techno-crunk and funk infused refix of ‘Asnosmia.’

If you are passionate about gaining a collection of 2012’s best music for the summer, this is a highly recommended selection of tunes. Ahab is a promising musical intellect, and is a welcome and glowing addition to MalLabel’s sterling line of young and able producers who have graced the camp with releases. Take a listen and be moved by the rock and thrust of undeniably infectious beats that inhabit the planetoid of party jams that is Ahab’s “Asnosmia” EP.
